Magpupungko Rock Pools is one of the best attractions in Siargao. Most people know that Siargao is the ultimate surfer paradise in the Philippines. I have known this fact as well, but it seems a bit ludicrous that I’d never really planned to learn how to surf in Siargao. When I planned our trip to the island, I only have one thing in mind, which is to
swim with the stingless jellyfish of Bucas Grande. As long as I got to swim with the jellyfish, I would be happy.

When I finally arrived in the island, I realized Siargao is more than the waves, it goes well beyond surfing and fancy beach resorts. The laid back vibe of Siargao sets the tone for the entire trip once we landed. The island’s friendly locals (free from annoying vendors and tour operators!) and beautiful scenery makes you want to stay forever. Its no wonder so many expats decided to stay here for good.

the town of General Luna |
On our second day, my friends and I decided to go to
Magpupungko Rock Pools in Pilar, about an hour drive from General Luna. Normally, people would rent a motorcycle (about 350 pesos per day) and travel to Pilar on their own. But since we don’t know the way, we asked Kuya Nante (the guy who took us to Bucas Grande on our first day) to guide us. A short negotiation took place that morning and we agreed to rent another motorcycle since we were a group of 3.

I was a bit apprehensive when I learned that it will take an hour to get to Magpupungko. Thankfully, the roads in General Luna and the road leading to Pilar were paved and a real joy to ride. The refreshing sight of coconut trees and green fields in the countryside calmed my nerves. Farmers and the locals on the roadside gave us a friendly wave as we drove by. That habal-habal ride was one of the best I have experienced, so far.

So, that’s how our second day in Siargao went! Looking at these photos now, I thought to myself, I need to come back and explore this island again. And I will surely return for a second time. 🙂
My next blog post will be about our afternoon surfing session in Cloud 9. Watch out for that! 🙂 Thank you for reading! Any comments? Questions? Let’s chat down below!
