Magpupungko Rock Pools in Siargao: The Ultimate Travel Guide

Siargao is the ultimate surfer’s paradise in the Philippines, drawing surfers from all over the world. I was well aware of this reputation, yet, oddly enough, learning to surf wasn’t a priority when I planned our trip. My goal was different, and it had nothing to do with catching waves. What I was truly excited about was the chance to swim with the stingless jellyfish in Bucas Grande and explore the beautiful Magpupungko Rock Pools. I knew that as long as I got to experience those unique encounters, I’d be happy.

When I finally arrived on the island, I realized that Siargao is about so much more than waves, surfing, and beach resorts. The island has a unique, laid-back vibe that sets the tone for your entire trip from the moment you land. Friendly locals, free from the usual pushy vendors and tour operators, make you feel instantly at home, and the stunning scenery makes you want to stay forever. It’s no wonder so many expats have decided to settle here for good.

Before diving into this post, take a look at my Siargao Itinerary for First-Time Visitors for a complete guide to the island’s top attractions, local tips, and must-do activities. It’s the perfect starting point for planning an unforgettable adventure in Siargao!

How to get to Magpupungko Rock Pools

On our second day in Siargao, my friends and I set out to explore Magpupungko Rock Pools in Pilar, about an hour’s drive from General Luna. Many travelers rent motorcycles (around 500 pesos per day) and make the trip independently. Since we weren’t familiar with the route, we asked the local who guided us to Bucas Grande on our first day to help us out. After a quick negotiation that morning, we agreed to rent an additional motorcycle for our group of three.

If you prefer not to drive yourself, land transfers to Magpupungko Rock Pools are easily available. You can arrange them through locals or book online with several tour providers who offer guided trips. Either way, getting to this stunning natural attraction is straightforward. Here are some of the tours to choose from online:

Habal-Habal Ride from General Luna

I was a bit apprehensive when I found out it would take an hour to reach Magpupungko. Thankfully, the roads from General Luna to Pilar were paved and surprisingly enjoyable to ride. As we cruised along, the refreshing views of coconut trees and lush green fields in the countryside quickly eased my nerves. Local farmers and villagers along the roadside gave us friendly waves, adding warmth to the journey. That habal-habal ride turned out to be one of the best I’ve experienced so far.

A habal-habal is a popular mode of public transportation in rural areas of the Philippines, particularly in mountainous or less accessible regions where regular vehicles might struggle. It’s essentially a motorcycle, often modified to carry multiple passengers or goods.

Magpupungko Rock Pools Entrance Fee and Parking

Magpupungko Rock Pools has an entrance fee of 50 pesos per person. This fee helps maintain the area and support sustainable tourism. In addition to the entrance fee, there is a 20-peso parking fee per motorcycle. This small fee helps ensure the parking area is well-kept and organized. Bring cash for both the entrance and parking fees.

When to Visit Magpupungko Rock Pools

The best time to visit Magpupungko Rock Pools is during low tide. This is when the pools are most accessible and their stunning beauty is fully revealed. Low tide typically occurs in the morning, so it’s ideal to arrive early to experience the crystal-clear waters and explore the unique rock formations.

The dry season, from March to May, is considered the peak time to visit, offering sunny weather and calm seas. However, Siargao’s beauty is year-round, and even during the rainy season (June to November), the rock pools can still be enjoyed, though it’s best to check tide schedules and weather forecasts to ensure a pleasant experience.

Things to Do in Magpupungko Rock Pools

Magpupungko Rock Pools offers so much to see and do that I highly recommend visiting it DIY style. With its breathtaking beauty, it’s easy to end up spending the whole day there. If you join a guided tour, though, the stop here is usually limited to just 2-3 hours, which can feel rushed given how much the site has to offer. Going on your own gives you the flexibility to make the most of this stunning natural wonder.

Swim in the Crystal-Clear Pools

The highlight of my visit to Magpupungko Rock Pools was definitely swimming in the crystal-clear waters. The pools, surrounded by dramatic rock formations, were absolutely stunning. I spent a good amount of time exploring the different pools. Some were deep enough for a swim, while others were shallow, perfect for just relaxing and enjoying the scenery.

Try Cliff Jumping

Feeling a bit adventurous, I decided to try cliff jumping from one of the rock ledges. The adrenaline rush of leaping into the refreshing water below was unforgettable. It was definitely a highlight of my visit, and the views from up top made the experience even more thrilling. I made sure to check the water depth before jumping to stay safe, but it was totally worth it.

Explore the Rock Formations

The area is filled with unique geological features, and during low tide, I was able to see all sorts of small marine life in the pools. It was like discovering hidden gems all around me.

Relax and Sunbathe at Magpupungko Beach

After all the exploring, my friends and I found a quiet spot at Magpupungko Beach to just relax and soak up the sun. The peaceful atmosphere was the perfect way to unwind.

Picnic by the Pools

During our visit, I noticed some tourists enjoying a picnic by the pools, snacks in hand. Our guide mentioned that it’s not prohibited to bring food to the area, but it’s important to clean up after yourself.

What to Bring in Magpupungko Rock Pools

  • Dry Bag – There aren’t any places to store your things once you’re at the pools. It’s a good idea to bring a dry bag to keep your belongings safe and dry.
  • Swimwear and a Towel – Of course, you’ll want to swim in the crystal-clear pools, so make sure to pack your swimwear. A towel is also handy for drying off afterward.
  • Aqua Shoes – The rocks can be slippery and uneven, so wearing aqua shoes or sturdy sandals will make it safer to walk around the pools.
  • Reef-safe Sunscreen and Hat – Even though you’ll be surrounded by water, it’s easy to get sunburned, especially during the midday sun. Sunscreen and a hat will help protect you from the heat.
  • Snacks and Water – While there are a few carinderias (local eateries) near the beach area, it’s always a good idea to bring your own snacks and water, especially if you plan to spend a few hours exploring or relaxing by the pools.
  • Camera/Phone – Don’t forget to bring a waterproof camera or a phone in a waterproof case to capture the stunning views of Magpupungko.
