Not a lot of people know this but I am a minimalist. If you’ve been following me on social media, you might have noticed that I’ve been wearing the same set of clothes and carrying the same bag over and over again. Whenever I see a cute bag, it would take months for me to decide if I should get it or not. But when I saw BidiBidi Bags on a recent trip to Baao, Camarines Sur, I didn’t hesitate to get one right away.
This BidiBidi bag sparks so much joy. When I first got my hands on it, I already imagined where I will use it and what sort of stuff I will put in it. Aside from its uniqueness, the story behind this bag and brand impressed me. Read on if you want to know more about BidiBidi Bags.
BidiBidi Bags: A Social Enterprise in Baao, Camarines Sur
BidiBidi, as fondly called by her friends, is Bernadette De Los Santos. She is an artist, designer, farmer, environment advocate, and social entrepreneur, all rolled into one. As an environmental advocate, she uses only sustainable materials and upcycling to create products that can be enjoyed by all.
She loves to express her passion through her designs of bags and other products. With an eye for exciting color combinations, she has found ways to incorporate embroidery into her masterpieces. Her signature style includes hand-embroidered caras (faces) and gorgeous crochet with striking colors.
Her beautiful bags truly bring both worlds together, the environment and art, and are sure to turn heads when you wear them.
BidiBidi Bags: Sustainable Livelihood for the Women of Baao, Camarines Sur
Each BidiBidi product tells the story of women who want to improve the lives of their families. According to Bernadette De Los Santos, one of her goals is to empower out-of-school youth and women (mostly wives of farmers) in her community by providing them with a sustainable livelihood. She also aims to preserve the skill of hand embroidery, of which Baao, Camarines Sur, was known for in the 70’s. She designs the bags but the women decides which colors will bring the caras (faces) to life.
BidiBidi Bags: Fashionable but Sustainable
Made from upcycled and locally-sourced materials from the weavers of Buhi, also in Camarines Sur, BidiBidi Bags are both unique and eye-catching. They feature striking, intricate embroidery, and playful shapes that make each bag special in its own way.
By purchasing these bags you not only get a stylish accessory, you also provide an invaluable contribution towards the livelihood of the talented women crafting these bags with love and care.
