Novotel Citygate Hong Kong: The Best Base for Lantau Island Attractions

When I was planning my first trip to Hong Kong, I originally thought I’d book all my hotels in either Kowloon or Hong Kong Island. Everyone I knew who had been to Hong Kong said those were the best areas to stay in. But I also found myself considering Lantau Island. I started girl math-ing to see if it would actually make sense based on my itinerary.

If you’re also a first-time visitor in Hong Kong, this place might just be for you. Read on to know more about my stay at Novotel Citygate Hong Kong to help you decide.

My Novotel Citygate Hong Kong Experience

Location & Accessibility

Novotel Citygate Hong Kong is located in Tung Chung, right on Lantau Island. I used to think staying in Kowloon or Hong Kong Island was the only way to go, but if your itinerary includes any Lantau attractions, staying out here just makes sense.

The hotel is only a 5-minute drive from Hong Kong International Airport, and they offer a free airport shuttle. This was a lifesaver for me since my flight back to the Philippines was at 6 AM. I didn’t have to stress about finding a private transfer or waking up even earlier just to get to the airport.

It’s a short 3-minute walk to Tung Chung MTR Station, which connects you to the rest of Hong Kong. You can still explore Central, Mong Kok, or Tsim Sha Tsui easily. It’s about 30–35 minutes by train.

Now, if you’re planning to visit Ngong Ping 360Hong Kong Disneyland, or go outlet shopping, this location is perfect. Here’s how the travel times compare:

  • Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car – only a 5-minute walk from the hotel to the cable car terminal. Coming from Kowloon or Hong Kong Island? You’d need to take the MTR to Tung Chung, which adds 35–45 minutes.
  • Hong Kong Disneyland – just 2 stops away on the MTR from Tung Chung Station (~12 minutes total travel time). From Kowloon, it can take 30–45 minutes, depending on where you’re staying.
  • Citygate Outlets – basically next door. I literally walked out of the hotel and into the mall. Perfect for last-minute shopping or food trips.

For me, staying at Novotel Citygate meant spending less time commuting and more time enjoying.

I mean, look at that Mountain View from our hotel room window!

Check-in Experience

It was around 1 PM when my niece and I arrived at Novotel Citygate Hong Kong. We were running on barely any sleep from attending the Coldplay: Music of the Spheres, so I was seriously hoping they’d allow early check-in. And guess what? They did! No fuss, no long wait.

The whole process was super quick and smooth. The staff were friendly and efficient, and no security deposit required. We were given our room keys within minutes.

So off we went, up to our room! 🙂

this high-rise building is a total eye sore, though lol!

Standard Twin Room, Our Home Away from Home

The room was bright, clean, and had that fresh hotel smell that instantly makes you feel like you’re on vacation.

The two twin beds were comfy. Firm but not too hard, with soft pillows that were perfect for catching up on much-needed sleep. We each had our own space, which was great for spreading out our stuff without stepping on each other’s toes.

big room with natural light? yes!

One of my favorite highlights? The wide windows. They’re not floor-to-ceiling, but they let in so much natural light and gave us a beautiful mountain view. When it was time to rest, the blackout curtains worked like a charm. Super easy to adjust, and they actually blocked out the light completely.

lots of high-rises surrounding the hotel. what can we do? this is Hong Kong.

The bathroom was another highlight. It was surprisingly spacious, with a deep bathtub. There was a sliding wooden door on one side, and when you open it, you can actually see the mountain view through the room’s windows while soaking in the tub. Such a thoughtful design detail!

There were also clean towels, bath robes, complimentary water and toiletries.

this bathroom is big!

And let’s talk about the coffee station, because yes, I always check. There was a Nespresso machine with a few pods ready to go, plus complimentary tea and instant coffee. We didn’t get to finish everything, so I did what any practical traveler would do. I packed the extra pods and tea to take home. No shame. 😅

spotless and smells so good!

One of the Coolest Hotel Pools I’ve Seen

Another highlight was the swimming pool! It’s honestly one of the best-designed hotel pools I’ve seen so far. Think coral reef meets LEGO bricks. Even with a full travel schedule, I highly recommend carving out a little time to enjoy the pool. It’s 100% worth it.

And here’s a little tip: if your flight is later in the evening, you can check out, leave your bags with the concierge, and spend a few more hours chilling by the pool. I actually saw a few other guests doing this, and it just makes sense.

If you’re already done shopping at Citygate Outlets or don’t feel like squeezing in another activity, the pool is the perfect spot to relax before heading to the airport.

Final Thoughts (Would I Recommend Novotel Citygate?)

Yes, I would absolutely recommend Novotel Citygate Hong Kong! If you’re planning to visit Hong Kong Disneyland, take the Ngong Ping 360 cable car, do a Macau day trip, or catch an early morning flight, this hotel is a solid choice.

My flight back to the Philippines on my last day was painfully early at 6 AM! A private transfer from Kowloon or Hong Kong Island to the airport costs around ₱3,000. I was like, “No way I’m paying that much just to get to the airport!”

I’d rather use that money to stay in a fancy hotel near the airport and not stress about being late for my flight. So Novotel Citygate it was, and honestly, no regrets.
